My client is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the design, construction management, and administration of mechanical supply and installation contracts for hydroelectric projects.
In support of this role, the successful candidate may write specifications, carry out conceptual and detailed designs, prepare and review relevant project documentation, and provide guidance to junior/intermediate engineers, designers, and draftspersons.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate may be required to:
§ Assist with the feasibility analysis, cost estimation, planning, design, and construction services related to hydro-mechanical equipment and systems associated with hydroelectric power plants, including hydraulic turbines, governing systems, turbine/penstock inlet valves, mechanical balance of plant equipment, and other related systems and equipment;
§ Prepare accurate and professional project documents, including communications, progress reports, equipment procurement specifications, equipment condition assessments, etc.;
§ Prepare drawings and direct draftspersons in the production of drawings for piping and HVAC systems, mechanical equipment (including detailed design drawings of hydraulic gates, hoists, and related equipment), mechanical schematics, and equipment schedules;
§ Prepare and/or review detailed design calculations for hydraulic gates and hoists, piping losses and pumping systems, plant energy calculations,
§ Assist and/or lead staff with field activities including site inspections, equipment commissioning and start-up, equipment performance testing, monitoring and other field support;
§ Work to maintain strong client relationships, and actively participate in preparation of proposals, as well as business development efforts, within the team;
§ Evaluate equipment bids and participate in contract negotiations, review submittals, assist with vendor shop inspections.
QUALIFICATIONS
§ A minimum of 15 years of related and progressive experience in the areas of mechanical equipment design, mechanical construction, consulting engineering and/or operations and maintenance.
§ Good knowledge of hydropower facility mechanical equipment, including hydraulic turbines, intake and spillway gates, large valves, bridge and gantry-type cranes, etc.
Experience in related heavy mechanical industries, and particularly the design of mechanical equipment, may be considered in lieu of hydro experience.
Knowledge of hydro powerhouse mechanical ancillaries, including fire protection, water filtration/treatment, and complex pumping/piping, HVAC, and waste water systems, would be an asset.
§ Excellent English language communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise written specifications, technical reports, and project communications.
§ A degree in mechanical engineering, and current registration (or eligibility for registration) with a recognized institution.
§ Proficiency with office-related software applications including Microsoft Word and Excel.
In addition, proficiency with any of Solidworks, Autocad, ANSYS, and/or Mathcad would be an advantage.
§ Familiarity with major mechanical engineering design codes and standards, such as the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31.3, CMAA standards, as well as structural design standards (CSA S16 or AISC code).
