This post is a member of the Leadership Management Team (LMT), reporting to the Chief Executive and working with Elected Members to ensure the vision, goals and core values are translated into action.

The post holder heads the Children's Services Department and has lead responsibility for providing services focused upon improving safeguarding and education support and carries the statutory role of Director of Children's Services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities


Leading the Children's Services Department and working with schools, health organisations and other partners to deliver services efficiently and effectively and to meet departmental objectives.


Taking a lead role in the Council's transformation agenda to ensure services are fit for purpose and delivered within the resources available.


Advising the Chief Executive, the Mayor and Members of matters relating to services within the Directorates:

- Learning and Skills
- Safeguarding


Managing those reporting to this post so as to ensure:

- Services are managed well and within budget
- Targets set are met
- Council priorities are translated into action
- Resources are well organised
- Heads of Service are developed and trained
- Their staff are developed and trained
- Good industrial relations


Ensuring the efficient and effective implementation of corporate Council policies and procedures.


Representing the interests of the Council on external bodies and networks.
