Engineering Manager (Mechanical) - Pharmaceuticals - UK

My client is an international consulting and engineering company who specialise in the project delivery for challenging projects within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and process related industry.

They currently have an opening for a Head of Mechanical Engineering in their UK office, to manage the mechanical discipline and provision of professional engineering expertise in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, food, energy and other process related industries.

This will require a high degree of technical judgment and resourcefulness in the design (concept, front end and detailed), planning, engineering, specification, installation and commissioning of process industry projects.

Responsibilities include:
·To ensure that standards of excellence in mechanical engineering are radically and continuously improved in a way which will clearly differentiate the company from its competitors.
·To provide inspirational leadership to facilitate technical innovation and growth.
·To ensure that the engineering service provided is delivered on time, to cost and to the standards required by the client.
·Discipline resourcing to meet project needs.

Recruitment of permanent and contract staff.
·Functional line management for mechanical engineers and graduates.
·Staff development and training including Performance Development Reviews and Line Manager Safety Reviews
·Support/generate cost and man-hours estimates for proposals, studies and projects.
·Act as Lead Engineer on selected projects controlling design, specifications, costs, hours, quality and programme.

·Approvals and management of engineering and design work
·To develop and grow the department such that there is a natural strength in depth of mechanical engineering expertise including in the emerging technology areas.
·Ensure regular technical audits and design reviews are undertaken on projects.
·Provide up to date technical advice to staff and customers on standards, techniques and equipment within the mechanical discipline.
·Make technical presentations internally, to clients and to outside organisations.
·To ensure that safety issues are fully considered within projects including CDM duties as Designer and Principal Designer.
·Develop and implement the company's quality system and departmental procedures.
·Deliver mechanical design solutions, approve drawings and calculations ensuring fitness for purpose.
·Development and maintenance of mechanical engineering design standards and procedures.

Skills and Experience:
·10+ years of significant experience in mechanical engineering on capital projects, some of which should be in a responsible position of managing a team of engineers.
·Expert knowledge and experience of mechanical engineering design in fine chemicals, pharmaceutical and/or biopharmaceutical industries.
·Good knowledge of process clean utilities including clean steam, purified water, water for injection and medical gases.
·Operating experience within primary pharmaceutical, biotechnology or fine chemical.

Also experience of having worked within a contracting organisation.
·Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards, policies, and codes of practice for the process industries.
·Effective management of staff and delegation of tasks and authority.

Ability to assess and prioritise multiple tasks, projects and demands.
·Proven analytical skills.

Able to implement solutions exceeding customer expectations.
·Confident and articulate with clients including proficient presentation skills.
·Good interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a multi-discipline team.

Versatile, reliable and resourceful.
·Personal qualities that include the ability to gain trust and confidence with a variety of clients as well as within the company.
·Customer focus, commitment to quality management and problem solving.
·Ability to operate as a lead engineer on a variety of projects.
·Experience and good understanding of Designer responsibilities under CDM Regulations, design safety procedures and design risk assessment.
·Degree qualified in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline
·Chartered Engineer, MIMechE is an added advantage but is not essential
