US / UK Tax Trainee

Tax Apprentice (school leaver): up to £21,000 including performance related bonus

Tax Trainee (graduate): up to £30,000 including performance related bonus

(Dependent upon qualifications; plus holiday + pension + perks) 

Our client is a boutique but growing international tax advisory firm looking to hire a school leaver or a graduate to be trained in the preparation of US taxes for American expats living in the UK as well as UK taxes for non-domiciled taxpayers.

These areas are significantly more complex than regular UK tax and are a very niche area of practice. 

They are easy-going in life but serious about their work, and are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, and competent apprentice or graduate to assist the team in the preparation of client case work and handling client and admin issues.

If you perform well you could build a very successful career in the dual US/UK area. 

If graduate, they will train you from the ground up and support you in the process of becoming an Enrolled Agent (the IRS qualification for tax advisors) and ATT. 

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

In the first instance you will be, among other things: 


  • Using MS Excel to organise, analyse and manipulate company’s client information.

    This will be the initial focus of the role and some knowledge and experience with Excel is important
  • Performing the initial processing and the primary preparation of company’s client case work using their complex tax software to produce the first draft of their client’s output
  • Liaising with company’s clients to request outstanding information and update them on progress
  • Learning the rules regarding taxation of US citizens abroad 
  • Learning the rules regarding UK taxes for non-doms (and regular UK taxpayers) 
  • Assisting with the management of the overall company’s client book 
  • Learning the rules regarding taxation of US citizens abroad including: what is taxable income, treatment of capital gains and investment income, foreign tax credits, dealing with foreign corporations owned by US citizens 
  • Performing research into various tax topics as necessary 
  • In due course the role would lead to obtaining Enrolled Agency (US) and ATT (UK)  qualifications 

Key Skills & Qualifications:

Our client requires someone who completes their work to a high standard, has very good attention to detail, can take the initiative, can learn quickly, and fit well within the team. 

You need: 


  • If school leaver, minimum 5 GCSEs Grades A

    *- C or 4 - 9 (inc.

    Maths and English Language) 
  • If school leaver, minimum of 104 UCAS points under the 2017 tariff point system (e.g.

    BCC at  A Level or equivalent qualifications) excluding General Studies 
  • If graduate, at least a 2:1 degree score from a Russell Group university (or equivalent).  Extenuating circumstances will be considered if you attended a top 10 university 
  • To be very numerate and be able to understand complex concepts and apply them to new  scenarios; and be able to handle lots of numbers with accuracy 
  • To have a very good attention to detail, be a quick learner and be well organized 
  • To demonstrate an interest in tax / accounting / numbers / logic / law / language 
  • A strong work ethic and be enthusiastic and proactive, and be able to work independently and  in a team 
  • To live within an easy commute of the office or be willing to relocate (we are currently in London  N3 and soon to be relocating to NW1) 
  • Impeccable written and spoken English language skills, including good telephone manner 
  • To be competent with intermediate use of Microsoft Excel and other MS Office products 
  • To be pleasant to have in the office and work well with the small team

Benefits:

Salary is dependent upon qualifications, and an additional performance related annual bonus will also be given if you perform.

Paid holiday of 23 days plus bank holidays is included.
