Lead Scientist - Fermentation Development

We are currently looking for a Lead Scientist - Fermentation Development to join a leading biopharmaceutical company based in the Wiltshire area.

As the Fermentation Lead you will be responsible for the development of fermentation processes related to the culturing and processing of pathogenic micro-organisms.


Your duties as the Lead Scientist - Fermentation Development will be varied however the key duties and responsibilities are as follows:


You will lead fermentation projects while supporting the Head of Fermentation in managing activities dedicated to the development of GMP and non-GMP fermentation process.

It will therefore be your responsibility to provide expert scientific and technical knowledge in the fermentation area.


You will play an important role in technology transfer activities relating to the development and/or manufacture of the biopharmaceutical products.

This could be internally or between the company and its external collaborators or customers.


As the Lead Scientist - Fermentation Development, you will be responsible for initiating and implementing research and development activities for new projects within fermentation will be a key part of your role.

It will be your responsibility to then prepare project proposals for customers, implement project ideas, produce and review reports and present reports to both internal and external clients.


You will assist the Head of Fermentation in operational activities such as line management, recruitment, managing performance, supervising and training the staff within the team.


To be successful in your application to this exciting opportunity as the Lead Scientist - Fermentation Development, we are looking to identify the following on your profile and past history:


A masters degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g.

Pharmaceutical Science, Biotechnology, Microbial Fermentation, Microbiology, Biochemistry, etc.) is essential for this position.

A PhD in a biochemical or biotechnological area will be highly desirable.


Proven industry experience in a biopharmaceutical company working with fermentation processes, media development, scale-up and analytical methods is required for this position.

Experience handling pathogenic micro-organisms and toxic products would be beneficial.


A working knowledge and practical experience with managing a team will be necessary, and an understanding of GMP and other regulatory requirements will be beneficial.
