The 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, will be the biggest sporting and cultural event that the city and the region have ever seen.

With an estimated television audience of 1.5 billion people, it will showcase Birmingham, the West Midlands and the entire country as an amazing place to live, work, study, visit and do business.

When the Commonwealth Games start, the eyes of the world will be on the West Midlands, and so it is critical that visitors can travel around swiftly and efficiently whilst minimising the impact on residents.

With more than one million spectators expected over the eleven days, as well as competitors, volunteers, staff and the world's media, we must get our transport offering just right - and this role will play an important part in making this happen by helping to define, develop and deliver operational strategies relating to the delivery of Games-time spectator and workforce bussing transport.

As Assistant Spectator Transport Manager, you will join the team on a fixed-term basis until August 2022 and provide transport planning, development and operational delivery of bus spectator transport services leading up to and during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

You will work at a strategic and tactical level, applying transport planning principles within a Games context.

What will you be doing?

, Develop and assemble evidence to understand and demonstrate the impact of Games on the transport network, identifying measures and plans to support successful Games delivery
, Project manage the development and delivery of specific projects related to Games delivery, covering public transport, park and ride, accessible transport and active travel
, Support the Spectator Transport Manager in acting and contributing as an interface between the Spectator and Workforce Team and Venue Transport Working Groups and other external Games' meetings
, Liaise with programme and project managers within TfWM and external partners, including the B2022 Organising Committee, to support appropriate governance and ensure adherence to the programme
, Support the planning and delivery of spectator and workforce services meeting agreed service level requirements
, Support the relationship with the Organising Committee and other partners on matters relating to spectator and workforce transport
, Prepare and deliver Games-time operational plans across one or more transport modes: Bus, Rail, Active travel, Parking, Taxi
, Provide operational support to the delivery of spectator transport at Games-time
, Manage consultants and service providers

About you

We're looking for someone who has a background in transport planning who is able to apply their experience to the operational design, development and delivery of large planned events and who can support programme delivery across the Spectator and Workforce Team, ensuring adherence to the programme and managing project assurance.

Our ideal applicant will have some or all of the following:

, Technical knowledge and practical understanding of the application of transport planning principles to plan and develop a range of transport projects, covering modelling, feasibility and appraisal
, Proven experience of successfully delivering transport projects, covering public transport, active travel, parking and/or accessible transport
, Contemporary knowledge of the transport industry in the UK and West Midlands
, Demonstrable capability to work in a sensitive political environment, and the ability to manage stakeholders both internal and external
, Demonstrable experience in communication including the ability to present technical detail and project progress reports in an engaging and accessible manner
, Ability to perform in a fast-paced, complex environment and meet critical deadlines

About the team

Transport for West Midlands, the transport arm of the West Midlands Combined Authority, has been tasked with developing a Games Transport Plan for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Games Transport Plan is an integral measure, which will set out a strategic approach to planning and coordination of transport to support the Games; covering the transportation of spectators, athletes and the Games Family, while at the same time ensuring that any disruption to transport users is kept to a minimum.

The plan will set out a strategic approach to planning and coordination of transport to support the Games.

It sets out how spectators, athletes and Games officials and personnel will be transported come Birmingham 2022, as well as detailing how disruption to those conducting unrelated travel can be minimised.
