Service & Maintenance Engineer
Location: Thurso / Caithness area Salary: £40,000-£48,000 depending on experience Hours: Monday to Thursday 7:00am-5:00pm, half day Friday Contract: Permanent
We are recruiting for an experienced Service & Maintenance Engineer to join a growing renewables and heating business covering the Thurso and wider Caithness area.
This is a field-based role focused on diagnosing faults, carrying out maintenance, servicing and repairs across domestic heating and renewable energy systems.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in heating, service engineering or renewables and will be confident working independently in customers' homes.
The Role
As Service & Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for:
Carrying out planned and reactive servicing
Fault finding and diagnosing heating system issues
Repairing and maintaining heat pump systems
Supporting air source and ground source heat pump installations
Working across oil and gas heating systems where required
Attending customer properties across the local area
Identifying faults quickly and completing first-time fixes where possible
Carrying out routine inspections and preventative maintenance
Completing service reports and job documentation
Ordering or identifying required parts
Ensuring work is completed safely and to required standards
Providing a professional service to domestic customers
Working independently while keeping the wider team updated
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone with strong practical engineering ability and good fault-finding skills.
Ideally, you will have experience across some of the following:
Heat pumps
Air source heat pumps
Ground source heat pumps
Domestic heating
Oil heating systems
Gas heating systems
HVAC
Mechanical servicing
Electrical fault finding
Pumps, valves and controls
Renewable heating systems
You do not necessarily need experience across every area.
The key requirement is strong diagnostic ability and confidence maintaining heating or mechanical systems.
Experience
Ideally, candidates will have:
5+ years' experience within heating, service engineering, HVAC, renewables or a related field
Strong fault-finding and diagnostic experience
Experience working independently
Good customer-facing skills
Ability to manage service calls efficiently
Experience working within domestic environments
Full UK driving licence
Location
Candidates should ideally live within approximately one hour of Thurso, due to the field-based nature of the role.

Key Duties
Manage the daily performance and coordination of the rental department.
Create an operational plan to accommodate fleet expansion from more than 250 to approximately 450 vehicles.
Review existing working practices and introduce systems, procedures and service standards that can accommodate future growth.
Maintain accurate information covering available, hired, reserved and unavailable vehicles.
Forecast customer requirements and plan fleet capacity accordingly.
Improve vehicle preparation and turnaround between rental periods.
Coordinate with the workshop to prioritise inspections, servicing, repairs and vehicle availability.
Manage the full rental process, from customer enquiry and vehicle allocation through to collection and off-hire.
Allocate work across the rental team and ensure colleagues receive appropriate training and regular feedback.
Use performance information to identify underused vehicles, avoidable downtime and opportunities to increase rental revenue.
Review operating costs and introduce practical measures to improve efficiency and commercial returns.
Maintain accurate rental records, documentation and management reports.
Ensure vehicles are supplied and operated in line with legal, safety and operator-licence requirements.
Resolve service issues promptly while protecting customer relationships and the commercial interests of the company.
Maintain clear communication between the rental, sales, workshop, fleet and finance departments.
Assist with the onboarding and delivery of new customer contracts.
Provide senior management with regular forecasts, operational updates and recommendations.
Contribute to fleet-composition, vehicle-replacement and investment decisions.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
Previous management experience within HGV or commercial-vehicle rental.
Rental-sector experience involving either heavy or light commercial vehicles.
Knowledge of fleet planning, vehicle utilisation and rental processes.
Experience managing an operational team and setting clear performance expectations.
The ability to improve processes and introduce structure within a growing organisation.
Sound commercial judgement and awareness of how fleet decisions affect revenue and profitability.
Knowledge of transport legislation, vehicle compliance and maintenance scheduling.
A calm and decisive approach to operational pressures and customer issues.
Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers, colleagues and senior management.
Experience using fleet, rental or transport-management software.
A proactive approach to identifying and resolving operational issues.
The ability to develop alongside a rapidly expanding organisation.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced CNC programmer to join a growing machine shop facility in Bournemouth.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled CNC machinist with experience in CNC programming, to join a progressive engineering environment.
The successful CNC Programmer will be responsible for programming, setting and operating CNC sliding head machines to manufacture high-quality, close-tolerance components safely and efficiently.
Experience working with Citizen or Tornos sliding head lathes would be highly advantageous, although this is not essential as full training can be provided to the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities for the CNC Programmer opportunity in Bournemouth
Program sliding head CNC lathes using G-code and/or offline CAM software
Set and prove out CNC sliding head machines, including Citizen and Tornos
Modify and optimise existing CNC programs to improve cycle times, tooling efficiency and machining performance
Select, prepare and set cutting tools, guide bushes and workholding
